Your Medical Scheme recently announced their benefits and contributions for next year. You now have the opportunity to change your option for effect the 1st of January 2019.

Last month, Discovery Health, the largest Medical Scheme in the country announced a weighted contribution increase of 9.2% for members in 2019 compared to 7.8% in 2018.

Bonitas Medical Scheme’s announced increase is 8.9% for 2019, against an 8.7% increase the previous year.  They positioned themselves to enter a new era with a range of improved benefits by launching a rewards platform keeping their increase below 10%.

FedHealth “revolutionised” their offering by turning the well-known Medical Savings Account upside down. Their announced weighted average increase for 2019 is 8.5%.

These moderately increases put other Medical Schemes under pressure to stay below the 10% increase mark, however not all of them could do this.

Momentum being the fourth largest Medical Scheme in the country showed a 10.7% increase across all plans. This is slightly higher than the average industry increases of 3% to 4% above CPI.

Medical Schemes emerged from a challenging year against the setback of uncertainty around NHI, the government draft legislation which includes the Medical Scheme Amendment Bill and the proposed changes contained.

You as the consumer, therefore need to consider your healthcare requirements for the next year and ensure that the cover you have is appropriate to your needs. You are under no obligation to change your option.

Should you however wish to change your current option, you need to submit an “Option Change Form” before the required cut-off date applicable to your Medical Scheme.  If you are linked to an employer group, please ensure that you adhere to their requirements.
